FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What Do I Need To Bring?
A good sun hat, sun glasses and long sleeve shirt is recommended to be worn on a fishing charter.
A jacket or jumper for the afternoon is a wise option as at times it can become cool on the water with a setting sun.
Sunscreen is provided, but is a good idea to adopt the Slip, Slop, Slap aspect and apply sunscreen before you leave home.
Most charter trips leave after lunch, so it is a good idea to have lunch before you step on board, although nibblies and
cold drinks are supplied for the charter. All necessary fishing equipment is provided for the duration of the chartered trip.
Can I Expect To Catch A Barra?
Barramundi captures are usually a daily event at Lake Awoonga.
Seasonally and daily, the conditions for barramundi fishing fluctuate considerably.
Angler ability and mental attitude varies with each new charter and as a combination of weather conditions and angler traits,
your guide will best adjust to these circumstances to maximize your chances of success. As at July, 2008,
a 92% charter success rate is highlighted. It is a rare event when barramundi are not landed on charter, however even though Johnny works
extremely hard to make it happen there are times when a zero shows its ugly head. There is by far a greater chance of landing barramundi than not.
You can expect any sized fish from tiny to monstrous during an average fishing charter on Lake Awoonga plus those occasional hard days
with not even a strike or just plain bad luck where barramundi are hooked but escape. Johnny is a fishing guide, not a fishing god!
Mother Nature is still in control.
Can I Keep the Fish?
The barramundi fishing in Lake Awoonga is designed as a put and take fishery but promoted as a catch and release fishery.
The majority of barramundi captured on charter are released for future anglers to enjoy. Your fishing guide carries a digital
camera and can take photographs of your catch as memories of the occasion. The edible qualities of the barramundi in the lake
are not of the same standard of those barramundi from the salt water. Larger barramundi from the lake are not rated highly as
a food source, although the smaller sized, younger fish around the legal size are sometimes taken to try the quality.
A small fish will feed a number of people!.
How Do I Pay?
Credit card payments can be organised prior to fishing charters. Boyne Island and Gladstone are about 25-30 km from Lake Awoonga and ATM machines exist in these regions.
No ATM or credit card facilities relating to this business exist at Lake Awoonga.
This needs to be taken into consideration before arriving for your fishing charter.
